Big Hearts, Small Hands: A Lesson in Compassion
Our Grade 2 students took a special trip down the street this morning to visit our Salem School District Preschool classrooms, and the results were nothing short of magical! In honor of our school’s monthly theme of Compassion, our second graders stepped into the role of mentors and friends. It wasn't just a visit; it was a masterclass in kindness and patience.
Highlights from the Morning:
- Storytime Connections: Grade 2 students practiced their fluency by reading aloud to their younger peers. Watching them pause to explain pictures and ask questions was a beautiful display of empathy.
- Creative Collaboration: Together, the "big kids" and "little kids" worked on a hands-on craft. The second graders were amazing at guiding small hands and sharing supplies.
- Playful Choice Time: From building blocks to dramatic play, the students bonded during choice time. It was a joy to see our older students making sure everyone felt included and heard.
Why It Matters
Compassion isn't just a word we talk about in assembly—it’s something we do. By focusing on our preschoolers' needs, our Grade 2 students learned that being a leader means being caring, patient, and supportive. Some quotes from our grade two students-
"I liked reading to my buddy and doing the craft. I want to go back to visit my new friend."
"The preschoolers were so polite."
"I loved it so much!"
"I want to go back."
"It was fun to do the choice time with them."
"When I get older, I want my kids to go here." (The student was referring to the preschool)
The reviews are in: It’s a hit! Both the preschoolers and the second graders are already asking when they can meet up again. We are so proud of how our older students represented our school values and built new friendships across grade levels.
